Contaminated sites and brownfield redevelopment redevelopment projects are increasingly moving away from the conventional dig-and-dump approach to actual treatment (in-situ and ex-situ remediation), with existing proven technologies and innovative or novel approaches. The challenge lies in finding out which solution can effectively address the specific contaminants of concern and unique site conditions and barriers (physical, technical, process, and even social) in a sustainable manner.

Research and Development is required for both innovative solutions and existing technologies which will address market needs for assessment, remediation, and monitoring. What is required by the markets (DEMAND Side)? What is available from the vendors (SUPPLY Side)?

Research

R&D on new technologies, approaches and processes is required to remediate contaminated sites: Faster, Cheaper, More completely, More effectively, and More sustainably.

R&D may be conducted on existing technologies to:

  • Expand the breadth of application (i.e. varying site conditions and/or contaminant mixes)
  • Increase the performance and efficiency (while reducing the cost)
  • Incorporate greener solutions (more sustainable practices)

BLOOM conducts specialized primary and secondary market research and analysis for our private and public clients to help them increase understanding of market drivers, issues and opportunities; to support formulation of policy and programs; and to assist in developing sustainability strategies and implementation plans. We are recognized as a leading authority in initiating and preparing groundbreaking studies and thought leadership reports around sustainability.

Research falls broadly into the following categories:

Pure Research - seeks to develop pure scientific knowledge and is generally done at universities or institutes.

Applied Research - encompasses all other research including product verification, technology application and development, and knowledge application.

Collaborative Research - is designed to promote and harness innovative research partnerships between industry and other stakeholders (both public and private).

Partnerships

Technology development and demonstration is most effective if done in partnership with strategic stakeholders in order to:

  • Understand market needs and expectations (short, medium and long-term goals and challenges)
  • Build upon existing solutions and best practices (commercially-ready products and solutions)
  • Create a culture for early adoption (demonstrate success)
  • Develop critical technical and business talent (access and build support)
